Halloween Carving Kits

One of the most beloved and long lasting traditions surrounding Halloween is that of carving pumpkins. Did you know that this custom began many, many years ago in various Celtic countries? In the early years, turnips and beets were hollowed out and used as lanterns. Scary faces were put on the carved out lanterns in order to frighten away evil spirits.

One of the evil spirits that perhaps some were worried about was that of “Stingy Jack.” Legend has it that an old cantankerous man named Jack was making deals with the Devil himself. Tricking the devil is never a good idea, but that is exactly what Jack did. Jack, who had invited the Devil out for a drink, somehow convinced him to turn himself into a coin so that the drinks could be paid for. Jack (hey, he wasn’t known as “Stingy” for nothing) decided to keep the coin and put it into his pocket. Because the coin was right next to a silver cross in Jack’s pocket, the Devil was no longer able to transform himself into his original Devilish form. The only way Jack would allow the Devil to be free again was if he agreed to make a deal with him. The deal was that the Devil would accept that he could never claim Jack’s soul. The problem was, however that once Jack died, he was far too evil and unsavory to go to heaven, either. The Devil was true to the agreement he made with Jack, however, which basically left Jack’s soul to roam about in eternal limbo on the Earth.
