Ever since 1954 when Dr. Seuss first wrote The Cat in the Hat, the main cat character in the story has captivated and amused children all around the world. The mischievous cat, donned in a very large red and white striped hat, shows up on the doorstep of two children that are home alone while their mother has stepped out for a little while. In a very short period of time, all sorts of mischief and mayhem breaks out which of course both confuses and amuses the kids. Read Across America

‘Read Across America’ is a national day to celebrate the joy of reading. The idea was first implemented in 1997 as a means of getting kids (as well as their parents) very excited about reading. Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2, became the day the celebration would be held. Dr. Seuss has always been a champion of children’s reading and many of his books were written with the inherent purpose of teaching children to read basic vocabulary words while amusing them with fabulous (and a bit wacky) tales at the same time. The Cat in the Hat will always be one of the most infamous of his well-known stories. ‘Read Across America’ Day is a sponsored event endorsed by the National Education Association, the California Teacher’s Association as well as many of the country’s leading literacy advocates. Many local communities and schools will be marking this important day with book fairs as well as many other reading oriented activities. Make sure your town is one of them!
