Born in 1935, Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer, actor and cultural icon. Known simply as "Elvis", "The King of Rock and Roll" or just "The King", he began his career in 1954 as one of the first performers of an upbeat fusion of country and rhythm and blues, later known as "Rockabilly". His style, combining the sounds and styles of both black and white musicians, made him popular, as well as controversial, as did his uninhibited stage and television performances. He had a versatile voice, and successfully performed in various genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. In the 1960's, he made most of his 31 motion pictures, mostly musicals, that were highly successful. Elvis is one of the best-selling and most influential artists in the history of music. He has been inducted into four music halls of fame: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, The Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 1997, The Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Gospel Hall of Fame in 2001. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died in 1977 at the age of 42.
