Cat masks | Partial face masks | Mardi Gras masks | Bat masks
Back as early as the 13th century, masks were worn in Venice as part of a unique cultural celebration or carnival that was held annually to mark the date of the capture of Ulrich II who at one time had invaded the country. It is unclear exactly why masks were used as part of the celebration but masquerade balls along with elaborate dinners were the order of the day. During the festivities it was common to see jugglers, acrobats and other acts featuring exotic animals as well as birds.
This carnival and the festivities traditionally held in Venice are where many of the traditions surrounding Mardi Gras stem from.
