Back in the early 1960’s, a new generation of young people became part of a new subculture, which would eventually become known as the Hippies. The term Hippie is actually short for being “hip to the situation.” The things that Hippies considered to be “hip” probably varied somewhat but there were a lot of commonalities amongst them. Many Hippies at this time were vehemently opposed to the Vietnam War. Others were “hip” to enjoying the psychedelic type of Rock and Roll that was very popular at this time. The sexual revolution and the notion of “free love” was also an ongoing theme of this time period in addition to the use of various types of psychedelic drugs as well as marijuana. The Peace emblem became the symbol of the day, probably stemming from the anti-war movement and the growing popularity of free love.

Hippie fashion was borrowed from very primitive sources. Many Hippies grew their hair long and wore headbands around their heads. Long strands of beads were also worn in this nearly native fashion style. Bright, psychedelic colors became popular as well as tie-dyed shirts. Sandals or even bare feet were the likely footwear choice.
