Halloween Insects & Rodents

Hundreds of years ago, as summer came to a close and the cooler months of winter and fall began, a festival known as “All Saints Day” was celebrated. On the evening before the holiday began, it was said that the Prince of Darkness, Samhain, would gather together the spirits of the deceased to have a celebration of his own. In order to ward off the evil spirits, the Celtic people would make giant bonfires that were thought to scare them off. Because of the flickering light and the heat that was produced by the bonfires, many insects, rodents as well as bats were attracted to the fire. It wasn’t long before bats, rodents and insects became closely associated with the ritual of Samhain, which was an early precursor to the holiday as we know it today. As time went on, some people even thought that bats had a supernatural connection to the spirit world.
