Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home
Your house is on fire and your children are gone
All except one, and that's Little Anne
For she has crept under the warming pan.

Did you know that there are over 5,000 different species of Ladybugs? In fact, a large number of the Coccinellid species are nearly all black, grey, or brown so many are often mistaken for other beetles. Alone, there are more than 450 different species. There are also many different names for the little critters. The other name they are most commonly known by is Ladybirds (UK, Ireland, Australia, Pakistan, India, Malta, South Africa, some parts of Canada and the US, and New Zealand).

Only few species of these beetles are considered pests in North America and Europe and generally are notorious for being useful insects as they feed on plagues of aphids or scale insects which can devastate gardens, fields of crops, and orchards. The famous red and black spotted Ladybug, also known as the Harlequin Ladybug, was introduced to North America from Asia in 1988 to control the aphids’ population for agricultural needs. These illustrious beetles have since become the most common species as it has bested many of the native species.

A common wives’ tale is that the number of spots on the Ladybug’s back reveals its age. This, however, is not true as the life span of these insects is only 1-2 years. Across the globe the Ladybug is a symbol of luck, much like wishing on a star, and they are referred to as fortune bugs. It is believed in some places that a person’s wish is granted if a Ladybug lands on them. In Europe a “Ladybird” seen crawling along a young lady’s hand is though to mean she will marry within the year. Regardless of your cultural background the Ladybug is a symbol of fortune or what could be and is a beloved creature.
