Historical Information about capes and cloaks

Capes and cloaks were the earliest form of outerwear. The cloak or mantle was a necessary item of garb for all men of noble birth and position. It belonged to the nobility and dates from the earliest times. The cloak was a garment of distinction and the wearing of the cloak was a mark of superiority and nobility. At a time when fabric yardage was costly and labor-intensive, and sewing and tailoring had not yet evolved, this was the simplest shaping of woven material into something useful to wear in cold weather. Just a small amount of form allows it to hang from the shoulders and stay in place, freeing the hands for other tasks instead of keeping the garment wrapped around you.

There are various customs which have evolved from the use of the cloak and the distinction and importance have continued into our own time. For example, if a person were to throw down the cloak that he/she was wearing it was an act of defiance and considered a challenge that was being given. In the same respect you may see a man take off his coat or shirt and throw it to the ground right before a fight or altercation.

In modern times, cloaks and capes are often relegated to the realm of costume, with the extra fabric viewed as bulky and intrusive to highly-active movements. However, they still shed the rain and can keep you warm with a style and elegance all their own, and since the patterns tend to be uncomplicated they are simple and affordable.
