"Don't torture yourself, Gomez, Darling....that's my job," purrs Morticia, the sombre, but beautiful matriarch of the Addams family. Dressed in her signature form-fitting black gown, she reigns over the family home on North Cemetery Ridge. Gomez, her wealthy husband, has destructive tendencies, but is completely overcome with romance, if she utters a single word in French. Her daughter is the homicidal, Wednesday Addams, and her son is the bumbling, but strong, Pugsley. Add to these, Lurch, a seven-foot butler, Thing, a disembodied hand, Uncle Fester, Gomez' older, more demented brother, Grandmama, the witch and Cousin It, a small, hair-covered being with no perceptible appendages, and you have a glimpse into the grim, creepy world of the Addams Family.

The Addams family was originally the idea of cartoonist Charles Addams and his close friend, science fiction master, Ray Bradbury. Bradbury went on to write his own version of the concept, naming them the Elliott family. Addams, on the other hand, brought the Addams Familly to the New Yorker magazine in the 1950's, to the delight of millions. The macabre and sinister themes of the cartoons were always balanced by the good manners and courtesy of the Family members. In all, before his death in 1988, Charles Addams penned over 1300 published cartoons for the New Yorker, which also, occasionally, appeared in Colliers Magazine and TV Guide.

The popularity of The Addams family cartoons inspired a live action television series, which starred John Astin as the indomitable Gomez, and Carolyn Jones as Morticia. The series appeared on ABC for two seasons, 1964-1966.

In recent years, three live action movies have also been based on the cartoons: The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, and The Addams Family Reunion.
