Super selection of Props and Halloween Decorations for 2011!
Most of the modern Halloween decorations that we have today have deep roots in folklore and traditions from the past. For example, the annual Halloween practice of carving pumpkins began as a Gaelic custom from long ago. Villagers would carve out the insides of turnips or beets in order to use them as lanterns. When this practice eventually came into use in America, pumpkins were used instead. The lanterns were symbolic to the people of this time and represented spirits being present in the darkness, or perhaps souls being released from the bounds of purgatory.
As for the term Jack O’ Lantern, there is an old traditional tale about a man named Jack who was ornery, cheap, angry and bitter. He was said to even have had some dealings with the devil himself, one time actually entrapping the devil and stripping him of his powers. Before he would release him back to Hell, Jack made the Devil promise him that he would never be taken into Hell. When Jack finally one day died, he was far to evil to enter Heaven, but the Devil kept his promise and didn’t take him to Hell, either. Jack was cursed to roam about in limbo forever. The Devil, in parting, threw Jack a single, eternally burning ember to light his way as he roamed about for eternity.
