Once primarily a religious holiday, St. Patrick’s Day was a holiday used to commemorate St. Patrick, the most well known of the Irish patron saints as well as to mark the arrival of Christianity into Ireland. St. Patrick was said to have used the shamrock, a 3 leafed plant when he was explaining the holy trinity to pagan Irish people. It became popular to wear green as well as shamrocks in his honor and memory on this holiday that celebrated his life. The wearing of green and the close association of the shamrock to St. Patrick’s Day will always be analogous and since has become a traditional feature of this holiday.
