Hook hand | Eyepatch | Pirate pistols | Pirate parrot | Pirate flag | Swords
Welcome to all things pirate! Pirates have many clothing items associated with them, many of these are based on fact, and other items are largely fictionalized. During the ‘Golden Age of Pirates’, pirates probably wore ragged as well as mismatched clothing as many of these men were ‘retired’ seamen and their clothing was likely ill-fitting as well as worn out from the hard labor they often did while aboard the ship. Being somewhat rebellious sorts, pirates favored colors that had been banned by the Elizabethan Sumptuary Laws that stated that violet, crimson and deep blue could only be worn by the upper classes of society.
Earrings were thought to ease seasickness by placing pressure on the earlobes, thus these became a popular accessory item worn by pirates. Pirate belts were often wide and worn on the diagonal over the shoulder in order to offset the weight of very heavy pirate weapons. Certain other accessories became associated with pirates, such as eye patches and hook hands, etc. Pirates did a lot of fighting in their business and would become injured from time to time during these encounters. Probably not as commonplace as we are led to believe, but the use of eye patches, peg legs and hook hands was definitely not out of the realm of possibilities.
