Throughout history, swords and knives have served men a very useful purpose. From the earliest days, men needed to have a tool that would aid in cutting and separating game as well as in preparing food. Early knives were often made from stone or bone and were primarily used for these purposes. Around 3500 BC in Mesopotamia, the art of metalworking became notable and copper was utilized to craft both knives and swords and their uses went far beyond food preparation. Swords and knives were commonly used for both cutting and thrusting which made them an ideal weapon. Eventually it was discovered that bronze was a superior metal when it came to crafting knives and swords. Bronze was noted to be stronger, could be made into longer weapons, and was far more resistant to damage as well as other corrosive elements. Iron eventually became the preferred metal of sword making when Bronze production became very scarce.
Throughout the modern age, swords took on less and less of an importance in military and battle use as handguns became the predominant weapon of choice. Swords still have a symbolic significance and are used for ceremonial purposes in uniforms, and military as well as naval services.
