The Hawaiian Lei is a traditional garland worn around the neck. Lei’s are usually made of flowers but other materials such as leaves, shells, seeds, nuts as well as feathers have been used. Traditionally a lei is given to a visitor to the islands as a welcome gift. In Hawaiian tradition you should always accept a gift of a lei and never remove it in the presence of the person that gave it to you.

Lei’s have become a very common gift for many occasions on the islands as well as in other locations. At high school and college graduations it’s quite normal to see a graduate wearing a lei. Weddings, birthdays and anniversaries are other occasions that may be celebrated by wearing lei’s.
