Since prehistoric times when men primarily used clubs and stones to defend themselves, weapons have been a part of the human experience. Essentially by definition, a weapon is any tool that is used to harm an individual or group of people. Sometimes weapons are used just as a threat in order to defend or in the act of warfare. Of course, weapons have also been used for more innocuous activities such as hunting, but regardless weapons and society have always gone hand in hand.
Prehistoric man eventually graduated from his use of spears, stones and clubs to the use of the bow and arrow. The Macedonians created siege weapons such as the catapult, while the Greeks eventually introduced blade-making techniques. The Romans were famous for vastly improving the quality of arms and armor and also for having unsurpassed battle tactics.
During the middle ages, gunpowder was invented which changed the face of battle from that point forward. New battle plans and strategies could be used as well as a wide range of propellant type weapons.
Eventually weaponry advanced to the use of cannons, rifles and machine guns and later in history warplanes and rockets. In today’s modern world, nuclear weapons of mass destruction are by far the most powerful ever known to mankind, a far cry from the clubs and stones of the prehistoric man.
