Witch Halloween Costumes
When you think of a witch, you probably conjure up an image in your mind of an old woman in black clothing who is very ugly and who perhaps is even green. The truth is, that witches have sort of gotten a bad rap, largely due to hundreds of years of exaggerated myths and a lot of misunderstandings about their actual purpose. In ancient times, long before the advent of modern medicine, there were women who were well versed in the use of plants and herbs as a source of healing and treatment for the sick or otherwise afflicted. People relied on these rudimentary medicines, as their options were severely limited. These ‘healers’ or witches as they would come to be known, were an aid to society and their purpose was to heal.
With the spread of Christianity throughout Europe, church clergymen were unhappy about any healing that was being done outside of the church. The fact that this healing was done by women caused further discord in the male hierarchy of the church. Witches were accused of being in cahoots with the devil and performing black magic. These rumors frightened people a great deal and through time witches and their witchcraft became misunderstood and misaligned with something far more dark and evil than it actually was.
Witches and the folklore surrounding them will always be one of the most dominant symbols that are associated with Halloween.
