The witches that have come down through legends and folklore are usually old, ugly and female. In the earliest days of history witches weren’t feared, but rather they were revered because they were versed in knowledge of things that healed, such as plants and herbs and could also aid with the pain and suffering of humans as well as animals. As Christianity spread, there began to be a school of thought that said that any healing abilities or powers that were used outside the church were of the devil. Soon witches started getting a bad reputation because of this and many feared them for this reason.
The term “witch” actually comes from the word “wicca” which means “wise one.” Once valued and sought as a healing resource, witches as well as witchcraft became associated with something much darker and witches were thought to be doing the devil’s bidding. Witches were also feared because they knew how to do things that most people didn’t—and largely due to a lot of misunderstanding, witches were misjudged. Some ancient witches knew how to use the powers of hypnosis to ease or eliminate pain during childbirth, and others were known to be clairvoyant or have some skills of telepathy.
