Witches have been associated with Halloween since the ancient days of long ago. In olden times, All Hallows Eve was a mysterious and somewhat frightening part of the celebration of Samhain, a harvest festival that was celebrated by the Celtic people. During Samhain, on the night before All Saints Day, it was thought that the spirits of the newly deceased were able to roam the earth freely. Witches (and sometimes black cats) were part of the many superstitions that surrounded this night known as All Hallows Eve; many of these ancient people believed that witches might be about casting evil spells or creating other mayhem.
