Devil Halloween Costumes
Ah, the infamous Prince of Darkness! The devil as many know him goes by a myriad of names; Lucifer, Satan, Beelzebub, Fallen Angel or Dark Prince. How appropriate then that his birthday is on October 31st, Halloween night. Halloween has a deep history in evil folklore. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, celebrated their New Year on November 1st. This day marked the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. They believed that on the night before the New Year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On October 31st, they celebrated Samhain or "festival of death" when it was believed that the ghosts of the wicked dead returned to earth. To protect themselves from these evil spirits, Celtic priests built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic Gods. During the celebration they wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them from evil spirits during the coming winter. Throughout history, Lucifer has been a crucial figure in many religions; however, today Hollywood portrays him as a fire breathing, pitchfork wielding evil character, always ready to make a silly bargain for your soul. Satan on the big screen is either represented as a hideous special effect or a bumbling fool.
