Plus Size Halloween Costumes! Plus size, full-figured, big and tall... Despite what the glamour fashion industry may think, the average clothing size in the United States for women is not an 8 but a size 14; and for men, it's not a 38 but a size 44. Today, designers are taking note and putting their best fashion foot forward in the plus size arena. BBW is an acronym for "Big Beautiful Women." In the past, a big beautiful body was associated with health and wealth. As a matter of fact, up until the 1960's, BBW and plus size women were praised for their beautiful physiques. Full figured women appeared in many fashion photographs, films and paintings from 1920 to 1950. In the 1960's, plus size fashion rapidly disappeared from the covers of magazines and on the silver screen while the changing fashion trend leaned more toward the skinny, slender framed models. It wasn't until the 1990's that BBW and plus size women were finally once again recognized as being healthier and more fit than their thin-boned counterparts.
