Religion has been a hotbed of activity for centuries; good and evil. It's been the cause of much civil unrest, oppression and wars between nations. But it's also the selfless act of millions of people of faith through the centuries, living their lives with compassion, forgiveness, hope and kindness due to their religious convictions. Religious Halloween Costumes! For many, religion is a way of coping with the ups and downs of life. Some look to their faith for solace in times of grief to help comfort them in their suffering. While many people are born into religion, countless others convert to a religion of their choice, mostly based on their own beliefs and which ideals feel the most comfortable to them. The issue of religious freedom has played a significant role in the history of the United States. No matter what country you live in, the political framework of that country has at some point been altered to accommodate certain religious views. The first pilgrims to settle in America did so because their religious views were not accepted in other countries at that time. In England, the standpoint on divorce changed dramatically thanks to King Henry VIII and the estrangement of England from the Roman Pope creating what is today's "Church of England" denomination of Christianity. For better or for worse, these changes have shaped the countries we know today. The breakdown of Christianity resulted in more than 900 denominations of that faith currently existing in the United States, of which the vast majority of Americans are members. America continues to be a haven for those seeking religious freedom. Today, approximately 3,000 religious based groups currently exist in the country.
