October is Finally Here!

  • October 01, 2008

Yea, it's finally October 1st and we've officially entered into the month of Halloween!  Only 30 more days until the trick-or-treaters will be ringing your doorbell.  Are you ready?  Have you stocked up on all your favorite candy to hand out?  Now remember, it has to be your favorite candy and not your children's that way whatever is left over is all yours and you won't have to fight for it!  Wow can you believe this great weather we're having in Kentucky?  The high's are in the mid to low 70's - perfect weather for fall.  Today we had our pool closed up for the year.  That's probably the only thing about this time of year that I don't like.  As soon as that cover is placed over the pool and all our lounge chairs and pool toys are put in the shed the backyard looks so deserted.  Next year I want to have a heater installed in our pool so that I can have the best of both worlds; cooler weather AND the pool still open into the fall months.  So, have you thought any more about what you want to be this year for Halloween?  If you're still not sure check out our Top 10 List of Best Costumes for the whole family or our Top 10 List of Best Sexy Costumes.  If you can't find what you're looking for there, then go to our homepage and simply click on a category that interests you.  The website is so easy to use and you'll find everything you need in the click of a button.  Don't forget to look at all our Halloween decorations for your home and yard too!  Two of my favorite decorations that I just received yesterday are the 63 inch Hanging Pirate and Tombstone RIP Cross with Skull.  The hanging pirate is huge with a long red ripped cape and creepy skull face with eyepatch.  I've already got him hanging on my front porch.  His arms are movable so when I spread them out to his sides he looks even bigger.  The kids love it!  It really is a great decoration for your porch or even hanging from a tree in your front yard.  There are so many great tombstones to pick from at HalloweenExpress.com but I really like this one.  It's really tall and looks like an old and worn tombstone.   It comes in two pieces and you just slide the cross into the base.  Both of these are going to make a great addition to our yard haunt!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins and More Pumpkins!

  • September 30, 2008
  • Jenna Maxwell
Halloween is a time of costumes, haunted houses, hayrides and trick-or-treating, but did you know that the most visual sign of Halloween is the pumpkin?  Many centuries ago, October 31st was a magical night when glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits.  Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles.  Soon after, it was the Irish who decided it was much easier to use pumpkins since they were much larger and easier to carve. During the Halloween holiday, pumpkins are carved into jack-o-lanterns and put on porches and in yards for all to see.  Today there are many different ways to decorate a pumpkin.  When I was young we would just wing-it and carve out two triangle eyes, an upside down triangle nose and a big open smiling mouth with a couple teeth here and there.  Now there are some really elaborate pumpkin carving stencils you can use to trace just about anything you like, scary or not, onto your pumpkin then start carving using pumpkin carving tools and following the lines you drew.  If you'd rather not go through the mess of cleaning out a pumpkin to carve it, you can just paint a face or design right on the pumpkin shell.  It's really easy and my niece loves to do it that way.    The best part of carving a pumpkin in my opinion are the pumpkin seeds.  It was a tradition in my house growing up that we would take the seeds, clean them, mix in a little olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper then broil them in the oven until they were crisp.   I swear they are so good and taste just like popcorn!  I kept the tradition going with my family and my children love them.  Sometimes I think they carve their pumpkins just to get the seeds!  If you're looking for some extreme pumpkin carving techniques and other decorating ideas check out some Halloween "how-to's" on the DIY Network. At HalloweenExpress.com we have some great pumpkin costumes for everyone from infants to adults.  Tom Arma's Pumpkin Costume is adorable and any child would look so incredibly cute wearing it.

Then for toddlers we have our Plush Pumpkin Halloween Costume.

And for adults, our Rotting Latex Pumpkin Mask or the Bad Seed Creature Reacher Halloween Costume:

This year become one of the best known icon's for Halloween by turning yourself into a sweet or sinister pumpkin with a costume from Halloween Express!

Make Your Halloween Costume Go From Good to Great With The Right Accessories!

  • September 26, 2008
  • Jenna Maxwell
Every year on Halloween people spend millions of dollars on costumes.  Of course costumes are what Halloween is all about as it should be.  However, the right accessories can take a good costume and make it great!  Accessories are everything.  The definition of accessory is "an article or set of articles of dress that adds completeness, convenience, attractiveness, etc., to one's basic outfit".  Accessorizing is really pretty simple for a Halloween costume.  Let's take a look at a couple of our "top 10 costumes for 2008" and see what accessories would give them that "wow" factor: For children we have: Indiana Jones Deluxe Child Costume - this costume comes complete with jacket and attached shirt, pants and the official Indiana Jones hat.  Sounds like all you need, huh?  Well if you happen to see the movie, Indiana Jones was hardly ever seen without his trusted whip and tote bag.  Put on some old worn shoes or boots and the look is complete.  You can even add the machete to top it off!

And at the other end of the costume spectrum for adults we have:

Miss Mafia Adult Costume - this costume comes complete with a black and pink pin-stripped halter dress, tie and cuffs with $ design cuff links.  However, if you want to portray the part of "sexy" with this costume it's as simple as adding a few accessories such as; fishnet stockings, a pair of high-heel shoes, a black fedora hat and if you'd like you can add the gangster "purse" briefcase for the complete look.

What is so great about ordering costumes at HalloweenExpress.com is that you don't have to look all over the website trying to find which accessories go with which costumes.  When you find the costume you want, you'll see a list of the accessories that go with it right there on the same page.  Just click and add them to your order - it's that simple!  However, if it's just accessories you're looking for or maybe you want some more ideas of what you can add to your costume to give it that "finished" look go to our "accessories and makeup" page.  It has everything you'll need to give your costume that perfect accessorized look!

You're My Princess!

  • September 24, 2008
  • Jenna Maxwell
As a little girl I grew up believing in fairy tales.  The ones where the handsome prince falls in love with a beautiful princess and they live happily ever after.  Television shows like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty make it impossible not to.  Disney has done a wonderful job making children believe in fairy tales and the Disney costume line makes it easy to dress like a princess too.  When my daughter, Olivia puts on her princess gown and dances around the house, there's an innocence there that takes my breath away.  I love that my children are still young enough to believe in fairy tales of princesses and happily ever after!  As we know they grow up so fast. To many little girls, the word princess conjurs up images of elegance, beauty, kindness and gentleness.  With their beautiful dresses and sparkly crowns what little girl wouldn't want to be a princess?  Recently here at HalloweenExpress.com we received the sweetest letter from a girl named Casey who lives in Rincon Georgia.  She designed her own princess costume called the "Ice Princess" and sent us the cutest picture of a blue dress with a big beautiful snow flake on the front.  So you see, with a great imagination (and great fashion sense) you can be your own princess this Halloween.

Here's Casey's design called, "Ice Princess":

Thank you Casey!  Your design is beautiful.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

  • September 21, 2008
  • Jenna Maxwell
For thousands of years, Halloween has been observed through ancient Celtic rituals. Its history is steeped in dark pagan beliefs. It’s believed that on Halloween night souls from the dead walked among the living and supernatural beings such as witches and ghosts roamed the earth. The Celts believed that evil spirits pushed the sun away and that witches would gather for the devil’s calling at nightfall, leaving many afraid of the darkness and what it held. If scary movies were non-existent would you really be afraid of the dark? Horror films have been around since the late 1890’s and since that time have strived to elicit this fear from the viewers.  Halloween is known as a time of year when scary movies are in abundance.  It’s the whole Halloween haunting mentality that brings out the ghost hunters and thrill seekers.  Haunted houses, haunted woods, haunted graveyards…they all thrive on darkness and bringing out your minds deepest fear of the unknown. Today of course Halloween is celebrated in a light-hearted way with parties, dances and neighborhood get togethers. And here at HalloweenExpress.com you'll find just about every possible horror costume made.  From the truly scary to the sexy-scary, HalloweenExpress.com has it all. Scary costumes like the  zombie costume, emperor of evil and prom nightmare adult costume remain popular scary costumes.  Or course, the most popular scary costumes out there continue to be the Slipknot and Jason costumes (from the popular Friday The 13th movies).  In the sexy-but-scary category the skeleton bride, countess carmella and fairy-licious graveyard costumes are sure to be a hit. So this year on Halloween, if you’re afraid of the dark you can still have fun with the good old tractor hay rides and pumpkin patches - you know, the kind of things you do at Halloween during the daytime!

The Dark Knight was one of the biggest summer blockbuster movies this year and is still going strong in theaters.  It brought Batman and The Joker back to the forefront in terms of merchandise, toys and of course Halloween costumes.  Batman is always a popular Halloween costume every year, but this year they're selling up a storm in both childrens and adult sizes and they're almost impossible to find.  Well, not anymore! Yard Haunts!

  • September 15, 2008
  • Jenna Maxwell
I was taking my son to football practice the other day and couldn't believe how many people already have their yards decorated for Halloween!  Every year it seems like homes are being decorated earlier and earlier and I love it!  After we got home the first thing I did was head downstairs to dig up some of our Halloween boxes filled with all of our decorations and brought them up.  The kids had a blast looking through everything with me and are biting at the bit to get outside and start decorating.  I've always said that my favorite part of fall is when I see the big orange pumpkins all lined up out in front of the grocery store.  To me, the pumpkins mean fall is here and Halloween is right around the corner.  Well low and behold the pumpkins are finally here!!  The weather all this week is in the 70's making it a perfect entrance into the fall season.  Many of the pumpkin patches are opening this weekend and I can't wait to take the kids.  At HalloweenExpress.com we have everything you need to turn your yard into the best Yard Haunt in the neighborhood.  You'll be the envy of the neighborhood! Tombstones, skeletons, grim reapers, cemetery signs and fog machines are just a few of the haunting decorations and accessories you find at Halloween Express.   Now is as good time as any to start decorating for everyone's favorite holiday - Halloween!

You Go Girl!

  • September 08, 2008

With Disney shows such as High School Musical, Hannah Montanna, The Cheetah Girls and Camp Rock it's no wonder that a lot of little girls dream of growing up to be a popstar diva.  I know first hand that my daughter's Sydney and Olivia love to watch all these shows and can't get to their karaoke microphone fast enough.  At the time we bought the microphone we thought it would be "cute" to watch them sing and dance in their room, however we were in for a rude awakening if we thought they would just dance and sing in their room and not the entire house!  My son, Caden begs them to stop just moments before he flings the closest not nailed down piece of furniture that he can reach.  But girls have to be girls and that means the more Caden complains the louder their singing becomes until finally mom has to step in!  The Disney shows make it fun for them to dance and sing and of course they know all the words to every song on every show.  I think it's great and I love to watch them perform (I just need to keep them away from the rec room when Caden is trying to play his Xbox). Girls love all the flashy outfits worn by all the teen pop stars.  The more glitter the better!  Last year for Halloween my 7-year old niece went as a Mega Child Star in full sequened and feathered costume including a cute (but fake) wireless headset microphone.  She looked adorable and thought she was just the coolest thing ever to grace their neighborhood while trick-or-treating.   This year is no different with High School Musical 3: Senior Year coming out right before Halloween and Disney's recently released television show Camp Rock.  Kids are eating this up!   At Halloween Express we have a huge selection of "pop diva costumes"  so that every girl can feel like a rock star this Halloween!

Could It Be - High School Musical 3?

  • September 04, 2008
  • Jenna Maxwell
If you have children or if you haven't had your head buried in the sand for the past two years, chances are you've either heard about or seen High School Musical and High School Musical 2 on the Disney Channel.  Did you know that when the original High School Musical came out in January 2006 it became the most successful Disney Channel Original Movie ever produced and the film's soundtrack was the best-selling album in the United States for that year?  Plus High School Musical 2 shattered cable television records when the premiere was watched by 18.6 million viewers.  That is huge!  Disney really hit it big with this show.  But Disney didn't stop there!  On October 24th, High School Musical 3: Senior Year is coming out in movie theaters - no more television for these guys, Disney is going straight to the big screen with this one and it's the first Disney Channel Original Movie to do that with a sequel. The series revolves around a group of six high school students; Troy - the basketball star, Gabriella - the math wize, Sharpay and Ryan - co-presidents of the Drama Club, Chad - Troy's best friend and teammate and Taylor -head of the science club.  There's a lot of singing and dancing along with all the drama of high school that kids love.   Since both High School Musical and High School Musical 2 were such huge hits I'm sure High School Musical 3: Senior Year will be just as well received!  I know my daughter is on pins and needles waiting for it to come out and she already has plans with a couple of her friends to go and see it the Friday night it opens.  I'm sure I won't be the only mother with giggling girls at the movie theater that night! However, the news just keeps getting better.  It seems Disney is already in the writing stages for High School Musical 4!  I'm not sure what they would call it since High School Muscial 3 is supposed to take place their senior year, but we'll just have to wait and see what Disney will end up doing with the clan at East High! You can bet we'll see a lot of the High School Musical characters ringing doorbells this year on Halloween.  For the past couple of years High School Musical costumes have been extremely popular and with High School Musical 3: Senior Year coming out the week before Halloween you can bet it will be even more so this year.  So if you're thinking of becoming Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Chad or Taylor for a night you'd better start ordering your costumes today!  Go East High Wildcats!

  • Jenna Maxwell
With a new school year beginning so is the headache for many parents that go along with it - spending money.  Our children need new school supplies, school books and of course, all new school clothes.  What is it with kids today, that for some unknown reason those jeans they wore all summer long are now not cool enough to wear at the beginning of the new school year.  Is it some unwritten teen and tween rule that you have to have a new wardrobe to start school?  And it's not just a new pair of jeans or a couple new shirts, it's jeans, shorts, skirts, shirts, backpack and shoes.  When I was young my "new" school wardrobe consisted of whatever my older sister didn't wear anymore and it was handed down to me! At HalloweenExpress.com they understand that and have a great selection of "Super Saver" discounted costumes, decorations and accessories at an unbelievable low cost.    You can pick from historical couple costumes such as Mark Antony and Cleopatra;

or more humorous couple costumes such as Doctor and Nurse Get Well;

or maybe you would prefer a more popular couple costume such as a Pirate and Buccaneer Beauty.

No matter what you decide whether it's a couple costume theme or individual you'll find it in our "Super Saver" section on the home page.  Everyone loves to have fun and save money and you can do both this Halloween at HalloweenExpress.com!  But hurry, at these prices the costumes won't last long!
