Creating a Gothic Makeup Look
Much of the Gothic look that we think of today can be traced back to art and literature influences that were found in the 18th and 19th centuries. During those periods in history both art and literature contained many darker elements, juxtaposing horror and romance which essentially has come to define what Gothic means in today's terms. Darkness, mystery and evil combined with passion and desire can equate to quite a mesmerizing contradiction.
The gothic makeup look is the perfect accompaniment to many popular Halloween costume characters. Gothic style makeup goes perfectly with vampires, witches, dark fairies or medieval queens. Creating a gothic makeup look is simple to do with just a few makeup items that are available at Halloween Express. Follow our complete step-by-step instructions for an easy makeup look that will bring your gothic costume look completely full circle.
Here are the items we're using to create this look:
Follow These Steps to Create this Look
Step One: Begin your gothic makeup look by applying a basic foundation to your face and neck (if desired) with a damp sponge, blending it in well. Choose a foundation shade that is one or two shades lighter than your normal foundation color would be. For our gothic look, we have used Mehron's Foundation in Extra Light. (#DD05)
Step Two: We have used the Scarlett Seductress makeup kit (#PM410075) to create much of our gothic look. Begin with the eye shadow palette. Apply the red color to the eyelid. For a deeper color, dampen the sponge tip applicator a little bit. Using the pointy end of the sponge tip applicator, apply some of this same red color as a liner underneath the lower eyelashes, applying it across the entire lower lash line.
Step Three: Next, using the deep charcoal grey eye shadow found in the same makeup kit, apply this color into the crease of the eyelid and blend well. Line around the outer corners of both the upper and lower eyelids. Once again, if you use a damp applicator it will intensify the color application and keep the eye shadow from flecking off onto your skin. Blend the two colors together well.
Step Four: To darken and really intensify the dark, gothic look of this makeup, add Mehron's E.Y.E. Cream (#DD107) in Black around the upper and lower lash lines with a slender brush and then blend this color into the crease of the eyelid as well. Use just a small amount at first and blend in well. You can always add more if you want to deepen the look for a very dramatic effect.
Step Five: Using the glittery eyelashes found in the Scarlett Seductress kit, apply a thin stream of eyelash glue along the edge of the lash. Let the glue begin to set up for several seconds and then apply the lash very carefully to your upper lash line with your fingers or with tweezers. Hold the lash in place for a few seconds until the glue begins to adhere.
Step Six: Using Mehron's Cheek Cream in Shell Pink (#DD140) dab a small amount of color onto the apples of the cheeks. Don't apply too much; the overall gothic look should remain still very pale.
Step Seven: Using Colorset Powder (#DD321) and a fluffy powder brush, lightly dust the entire face with setting powder in order to keep the makeup from smudging and to help your gothic look last longer.
Step Eight: Apply lipstick. You can choose the vibrant red color that comes in the Scarlett Seductress makeup kit, or you can do as we have done for our gothic look and apply a lustrous deep black lipstick. (#DE32)
