Creating a Mermaid Costume Look

Legends and folklore tell of aquatic beings that were half female, half fish. Throughout the ages, fishermen, sailors and sea explorers have reported supposed sightings of these beautiful and mysterious aquatic sirens. Mermaids have also been the featured subjects of many artists and authors. Most notably, Hans Christian Anderson's beloved fairytale "The Little Mermaid" was adapted for the silver screen by Disney in the animated classic feature film also entitled "The Little Mermaid." Mermaids are a favorite character to replicate for Halloween or costume parties. By following our step-by-step instructions, you can create a stunning mermaid makeup look that will be the perfect compliment to any of our many mermaid costumes. Our mermaid makeup look can easily be adapted to suit mermaids of all ages.

Follow These Steps to Create this Look

Step One:  Apply an even coat of makeup base to the face using a damp sponge and blending this well into the skin. We have used Celebre foundation in Light Beige (#DD411) but you will want to choose a color that most closely matches your own individual skin tone.

Step Two:  Using Mehron's Paradise Palette in the Pastel collection (#DD508), add a small amount of water to the turquoise shade and apply this evenly to the eyelids using a small brush or sponge tip applicator.

Step Three:  Using the same turquoise color as outlined in Step two and a thin brush, carefully paint a curlicue that extends from the outer edge of the eye. After you have finished the upper curlicue, paint on a similar curlicue angling downward from your eye in the opposite direction. Repeat this process on the other eye.

Step Four:  With a small brush and the same turquoise color, paint a curved shape above the eyebrow. A sideways S-shape is ideal, ending the curve just past the outer edge of the eyebrow.

Step Five:  Highlight the turquoise lines that you have painted with a second color. We have used the pink color from the same Paradise Palette, but the bright green works very well, too and creates a very nice aquatic effect. There are no hard and fast rules, so use your creativity to individualize your look. We have applied the second color to the tops of the turquoise lines and curlicues.

Step Six:  Using a sharpened black eye liner pencil, (#CSPP002) line along the lash line on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Step Seven:  Apply a thin stream of eyelash glue to the edge of the Glitter eyelashes (#EA89) and let the glue set up for a few seconds. Press the eyelash gently to the lash line until the glue begins to adhere. Repeat this process on the other eye.

Step Eight:  Apply Celebre Cheek color in Wineberry (#DD429) to the apples of the cheeks with a damp sponge, blending well.

Step Nine:  Using a cotton ball, gently tap Paradise Glitter (#DD827) in White to the face in various places as desired. This will give your mermaid a "fresh out of the water" shimmer.

Step Ten:  Apply L.I.P. Color Cream in Cotton Candy (#DD103) to the lips with a lip brush or a sponge tip applicator.

Step Eleven:  Apply Glosstone lip-gloss in Natural (#DD366) over the lip color to add a little shimmer to the lips.

Now it's time to get into your selected Mermaid costume! Our model is wearing a stunning Mermaid Costume, (#IC1033) which is a part of our Premium costume collection. The fitted gown is topped with a shimmering pink corset style top created to look like seashells. The very fitted skirt is adorned with sparkling sequins that shimmer like exotic fish scales. The very bottom of the skirt is flared out with a flirty organza flounce, created specifically in the shape of a fish tail. The Mermaid look is then perfectly accessorized with a beautifully adorned starfish shape featuring feathers and sequins. This lovely accessory is conveniently attached to a headband making it super easy to wear. Mermaid perfection!

Our lovely Mermaid's underwater adventure is just beginning as she gets together with her whimsical crustacean friend (Crawdad #FM67995) and the always trouble-making Ursula the Sea Witch (#DG27199). May all your underwater adventures be good ones as you explore the good times that are often found while under the sea!
