Creating a Wicked Witch of the West Costume Look

When it comes to the most classic Halloween characters, you would be hard pressed to find one that goes back as far into history as the witch. Long considered traditional Halloween fare, the character known as the witch has stood the test of time, and to this day continues to be one of the most popular characters to recreate for Halloween dress up. These days, the witch character herself comes in a wide variety of styles. Sexy witches, cute witches, pretty witches, scary witches and ugly witches (just to name a few) are some of the many types of witch characters you can adopt for your very own this Halloween. One of the most notorious and memorable witch characters of all time was the one made infamous in the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. This evil, green-faced witch put fear and terror into a girl from Kansas and her odd crew of friends, including a tin man, a scarecrow and a cowardly lion.

If you want to create the look of this truly frightening and traditional witch, (warts and all) we have put together some very simple step-by-step instructions to help you accomplish this. With a few makeup items found at Halloween Express, you can easily make the transformation from just being you to becoming an amazing, scary and authentic-looking witch! Be warned, however, your friends may not even recognize you!

Follow These Steps to Create this Look

Step One:  Start with a clean and dry face. Apply some of the green base makeup to the Witch Appliance (#CSEZ128) before applying it to the face if desired. Make sure the witch chin and nose appliances will fit properly before applying spirit gum (included with the appliance kit); trim a little off areas to be glued onto the skin if necessary. Begin with the chin appliance. Apply spirit gum to the edges of the appliance and a little to the skin itself in the area where the appliance will be attached. Press and remove the appliance a few times to make the spirit gum very tacky. Press the appliance into place, gently smoothing out the edges and applying more spirit gum as needed. Repeat this process for the nose appliance.

Step Two:  Using liquid latex, (#DD233) brush the product around the edges of the appliance to help blend the edges more seamlessly into the skin. Allow the latex to dry and apply a second coat if necessary.

Step Three:  Using Mehron's Liquid Makeup in Green (#DD204) and a wide brush, cover the entire face area and glued-on appliances with the green makeup and let it dry thoroughly. Make sure all exposed areas of the skin; neck area and ears are painted green. Paint the fingers and hands with the green makeup, too if desired.

Step Four:  For the rest of the witch look we have used the Cinema Secrets Witch Makeup kit. (#CSEZMU004) The kit comes complete with light green, purple and black makeup colors along with a thin brush, perfect for lining details and sponges for application. The kit also comes with a colorless setting powder to set the look when finished. Begin with the purple makeup color and a clean sponge wedge. Shade and contour the face as desired under the cheekbones, around the hairline, on the sides of the nose, and on the chin. Apply the purple color on the eyelids and line under the eyes if desired for a more hollowed out look. When applying makeup to the appliance, use care and a light touch.

Step Five:  Using the black color found in the makeup kit, add details to the face. Create a high-arched, witch eyebrow over each eye. Line the eyes for emphasis. Apply the black to the lips for a truly dramatic effect.

Step Six:  Using the pale green color found in the makeup kit, highlight some areas of the face you want to add emphasis to, such as the warts found on the appliances, the cheekbones of the face, the center of the forehead, etc.

Step Seven:  Using a fluffy brush, dust the entire face lightly with colorless powder in order to set the makeup.

We have dressed our model in a very traditionally styled witch costume inspired by the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. (#IC1022) The costume comes complete with a premium quality dress, a tulle slip and press on black fingernails. Our witch is in hot pursuit of the tin man (#RU15477) and the scarecrow (#RU15475), along with their sweet and innocent friend from Kansas, Dorothy. (#RU15473) Dorothy has brought along her beloved Toto, conveniently stowed away from the witch's prying eyes in a convenient small basket. (#RU583) Dorothy is also wearing white anklet socks (#UA3013), along with the most witch-coveted footwear ever, the Ruby slippers. (#HA105)
