Indian costumes, Colonial costumes, Shoe buckles and Pilgrim costumes! The first Thanksgiving was a friendly celebration between the Pilgrims and the Indians that took place in 1621. Squanto, a Native American who did speak English, taught the Pilgrims to grow corn and how to fertilize their crops properly to ensure a hearty harvest. The pilgrims had set aside a day to celebrate their first harvest and to give thanks. Probably out of gratitude to the native people for their assistance in helping them get settled into the new land, the Indians were invited to celebrate this Thanksgiving with them. For three days, a feast was held with eating, dancing and playing games with pilgrims and Indians present, both celebrating together peacefully.
