How To Create the Joker Costume Look

With the 2016 release of "Suicide Squad," the legendary comic book character known as "The Joker" was rebooted in a way audiences had never seen him before. If it is even possible, the Joker is creepier and more evil than ever! The Joker's look is legendary, and when it comes to Halloween costumes, you'd have to look hard to find one that is more relevant and exciting. No need to be intimidated by all that makeup, because creating a fantastic Joker look is easier than you think. By following our simple, step-by-step instructions, you can quickly pull together a Joker costume look that would even impress the notorious Harley Quinn.

Follow These Steps to Create this Look

Step One: The first step in creating the Joker look is to prepare the eyebrows for a bit of a disappearing act. Making the eyebrows less visible is easily accomplished with the use of a standard Elmer's School Glue Stick. (We used the purple one, but it dries clear.) Make sure your face is clean, dry and shaven. Using the glue stick, apply a layer of glue generously to the eyebrows and then using a stiff brush (a toothbrush works or an eyebrow brush if you have one) brush the eyebrows with the glue on them downward. Apply another layer of glue and then brush the eyebrows back into their normal state. At this point, you already have two layers of glue on the brows. Apply a third coat of glue and using a palette knife or other smooth, flat tool, press the object along the brows, smoothing the brow out as you push the brow hairs flat to the face. Let this dry. You can repeat the process if you have any rogue brow hairs that are poking through. Make sure your eyebrows are thoroughly dry before moving on to the next step.

Step Two: Using a relatively light shade of concealer, (#DD174) and a damp sponge, pat concealer onto the eyebrows. Gently blend the concealer in until the eyebrows are completely covered.

Step Three: Choose a very light shade of foundation to apply to the face next. The Joker has very pale skin--almost white--so don't be afraid to choose a very light shade. For our featured Joker makeup look, we have used Celebre Cream Makeup in Ivory Bisque. (#DD405) Using a damp sponge, apply the foundation to the entire face, ears, and neck as necessary. Blend the foundation in well but use care when covering your brow area so that you don't disrupt the eyebrow hairs you have carefully glued down!

Step Four: Using a purple shade of cream makeup (#CSCC046C) contour the face a little bit as desired using a light touch and a damp sponge. We have added shadows along the side of the nose, under the lower lip, underneath the cheekbones, along the hairline and sides of the face, etc.

Step Five: Using a setting powder (#DD321), lightly dust the face to set the makeup.

Step Six: Using Detailz Liner Pen (#DD509) carefully draw the tattoos onto the face. Draw the word "damaged" centered on the upper forehead. Draw a letter "J" on the left cheek. There are also a few random cracks on his face that you can add if desired. HINT: It may be easier to have a friend with a steady hand help you with this step, as it can be a bit tricky to paint on letters in the mirror.

Step Seven: Add a bright red LIP Cream (#DD103) to the lips. We have used Apple Red LIP Cream by Mehron. Blot the lips with a tissue.

Step Eight: To create the look of silver "grilz" on the Joker's teeth, we have used a small strip of aluminum foil to cover the teeth. If this idea doesn't appeal to you, you can also try using Tooth Fx, (#DD222) an easy to use, non-toxic product that will give you the look of dark, dirty, rotten teeth instead of teeth covered in grilz.

Step Nine: To give our Joker his legendary green hair, we have first slicked our model's hair back with a little bit of hair gel. Next, we have sprayed his hair with a wash out colored hair spray (#DE60) to transform his hair into a brilliant green color. Let dry and apply a second coat if desired.

Now it's time to get carefully dressed in your favorite Joker costume! We have dressed our model in the Suicide Squad Joker Adult Costume. (#RU820116) The Joker wears one purple glove, which we have created by spraying a white cotton glove (#BA02) with Purple color wash out hairspray. (#DE60)

The Joker. He's a notorious villain who clearly has so much fun being bad. Now you can be sure he's on the VIP guest list for your next Halloween party!
