Children Pirate Halloween Costumes! The history of Pirates probably goes back over 3000 years. Pirates, although somewhat glorified by today’s movies and other media, by definition were those that committed acts of robbery while out at sea. These “sea thieves” were rather notorious and would attack ships and even maritime villages at will for their own gain. Over the years, the Pirate has gained a bit of a reputation as a swashbuckling sea rogue that is evil as well as often a little bit bloodthirsty. Indeed, while out creating havoc on the high seas, quite a number of truly horrible and ghastly deeds were committed in the name of piracy. A great deal of legend surrounds the notion of the Pirates of old. You can’t really think of a ship of pirates with out visualizing the Jolly Roger flying in the wind. This use of a flag flying alone probably struck fear and terror into potential victims, and undoubtedly was well placed as an act of intimidation. The stereotypical Pirate ship always included an old sea cook with a wooden leg, a Captain at the helm with at least one hook instead of a hand, and of course the legendary eye patch over one eye. Often pirates were thought to wear golden earrings in their ears, and rumor has it that this was in case their body was found floating in the sea, the earrings could be used to pay for funeral expenses.
