Venetian Couple masks, Venetian Stick masks, Voodoo masks and Mardi Gras masks! The history of Venetian masks is nearly as colorful as the remarkable and elaborate masks themselves. Back in the late 13th century, it became popular to wear this style of mask, which probably originated as part of a celebration that occurred marking the overthrow of Ulrich II. The wearing of masks became a part of the annual celebration that commemorated this event, although no one is exactly sure what the correlation between the wearing of masks and the actual historical events actually was. Venice grew in popularity during the middle ages and was a popular tourist destination for the wealthy and socially influential society members. Masks were worn for various reasons, but were largely worn in order to conceal ones identity during various acts that may be considered by some to be immoral, dishonorable or perhaps even scandalous. Masks worn while in the pursuit of carnal and sensual pleasures apparently seemed to negate the acts themselves as long as one's identity remained anonymous.
