Designed to be a just-for-fun, silly holiday, International Talk Like a Pirate Day is just what it says—a day to talk like a pirate. For those of you buccaneers that are a little more darin', you can feel free to dress the part, too and spend your Talk Like a Pirate Day in full pirate regalia!
International Talk Like a Pirate Day was invented by Mark Summers and John Baur back in 1995. Since this time, the event has become a cult-favorite on social media platforms as well as on radio. On International Talk Like a Pirate Day, folks around the world will embrace a little of the pirate life and take the opportunity to use their best pirate speak. Bilge Rat-A dirty slimy rat that lives in the bottom of the ship. A term used as an insult.
Beauty-A pleasantry pirates use, often preceded by the word, "me." As in, "Come here, me beauty."
Buccaneer-Another word for pirate
Chumbucket-a bucket filled with fishing bait at sea; sometimes used as an insult to another person.
Cutlass-A Pirate's sword
Doubloons-Pirate money or coins
Matey-Friend or Shipmate
Poop Deck-the highest, furthest back deck on a ship.
Scallywag-a cheater, or a name used to insult a person
Shiver me timbers-an expression used when shocked or surprised
Swashbuckler-a swaggering, daring pirate
Walk the Plank-a deadly pirate punishment in which a person walks off a plank with hands tied, straight into the ocean
Yo Ho Ho-Expression of Pirate Joy
Ye-substitute this word for "you."
